Renewable energy group
The Wang Group, led by Professor Lianzhou Wang, is focused on the clean energy sector, developing new functional materials for renewable energy conversion and storage systems including photocatalysts, rechargeable batteries, and low cost solar cells.
The Group’s main research areas include:
- Developing efficient visible-light photocatalysts and photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting for hydrogen generation, water purification, and CO2 reduction for solar fuel production, and establishing a fundamental understanding of the relationships between the synthesis, structure, modification, and ultimately the solar-driven catalytic performance of new material systems;
- Developing high performance electrode materials for rechargeable batteries, including lithium ion battery, lithium sulfur battery, and aluminium ion battery. The key motivation is to improve the energy and power density of the electrode materials to satisfy the critical requirements of electric vehicles' power system.
- Developing efficient and stable perovskite solar cells, quantum dot solar cells, and integrated energy systems for sustainable utilization of intermittent solar energy.
Professor Wang also directs the Nanomaterials Centre that was established at UQ in 2000 by former AIBN Group Leader Professor Max G.Q. Lu, and the Group is building on the Centre’s strong legacy in partnership with the School of Chemical Engineering, in which Professor Wang has a joint appointment.
