The Andrew N. Liveris Building supports our researchers and students to address sustainability challenges facing our world to create positive change for developing populations.
This project was realised thanks to a historic gift from Mr Andrew Liveris and Mrs Paula Liveris.
At 11 storeys high, the building is the tallest building on UQ’s St Lucia campus, and the home for the School of Chemical Engineering. It acts as a vibrant hub for industry and interdisciplinary collaboration to address global challenges in areas such as energy, water and sustainable manufacturing.
Area plans

Heavy Engineering-South (HEL-S)
Room number: 161, 162
Activity: Biopolymers, biocomposites
Heavy Engineering-North (HEL-N)
Room number: 102
Activity: Clean energy, fuel cell testing, crushing and grinding, flotation and separation of minerals
Pilot Hall 1 Story
Room number: 170
Pilot Hall 2 Story
Room number: 168
Activity: Brewery
Dialogue: Chemical and bioprocessing skills are honed through real world hands on experience including brewing and fermentation.
Associated critical process plant skills including cleanliness, microbiology, advanced profile analysis, reproduceability are covered in these spaces.
Pilot Hall 3 Story
Room number: 169
Activity: Distillation column
Dialogue: One of a kind multifeed distillation plant with full computerised SCADA control and a remote Operator Control Room.
The unit itself has application at all levels of teaching - from plant operator monitoring through to full schematic design, efficiency calculations, optimisation and problem solving.
The unit includes a Vacuum assisted glass column (note both packed and unpacked sections), Tank Farm, Chilled Water cooling circuit and Steam Boiler heating.
Students can access selected sampling points in the plant for chemical analysis during operation.
Flotation Laboratories
Room: 104, 105, 106, 109
Activity: Flotation, Sample Preparation
