It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Emeritus Professor Edward “Ted” White AM, whose remarkable 60-year career at The University of Queensland left an enduring mark on the university, the field of chemical engineering, and the thousands of students he inspired.
Ted’s journey at UQ began in 1951 as an undergraduate student. After graduating with First Class Honours in 1955, he devoted more than 40 years to teaching and mentoring students as a lecturer, senior lecturer, reader, and professor. Even after formally retiring, Ted continued to supervise PhD students and consult to industry for another 20 years, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to education and research.
Throughout his career, Ted made significant contributions to the study of sugar crystallisation, authored around 260 journal articles, and held two patents aimed at improving centrifuge performance. He also co-edited 100 Years of Chemical Engineering at UQ, celebrating the centenary of the school he loved. Yet beyond these achievements, Ted’s true passion lay in guiding students and nurturing the next generation of engineers.
Ted’s legacy lives on through the Ted White AM Opportunity Fund, established to support chemical engineering students. The fund aims to create opportunities for PhD students, women, low-SES students, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and provide access to study tours, industry placements, conferences, and world-class teaching resources. It is a meaningful way to honour Ted’s lifelong dedication to education, mentorship, and excellence, and to ensure that his impact continues in perpetuity.
As we remember Ted, we celebrate not only his extraordinary career and achievements but also the generosity, kindness, and dedication that defined him. We are deeply thankful for the Ted White AM Opportunity Fund which provides a lasting way to honour his life and continue his inspiring legacy.
